Antioxidants in skincare explained

One of the Beauty buzz words in recent years has been the term ‘antioxidants’. Open the beauty section in any of your favourite magazines and you’ll find editors extolling their virtues and encouraging you to seek them out in your food and your skincare! So what are antioxidants and why are they so important? I spoke with Balance Me co-director Sian Jones who explained why they are essential to keeping your skin healthy and beautiful.

What are antioxidants and why are they important in skincare?

"Anti-oxidants are often vitamins or enzymes, which help to neutralise the effects of oxidisation and the impact of free radicals on our skin cells.  Within skincare oxidisation often happens due to sun or environmental damage.  The anti-oxidants help to strengthen the skin cells against free radicals and encourage cell and tissue growth, which in turn helps the skin to repair itself."

Which antioxidant rich ingredients should we be looking out for?

"Look for anti-oxidants rich in essential fatty acids and vitamins.  Natural extracts have the most concentrated power and deliver their unique complex directly to the surface of the skin.  High grade pressed oils and super foods are often the very best sources!"

Which Balance Me product would you recommend for those who want to add an antioxidant rich treatment into their skincare routine?

"One of my favourite anti-oxidant products is our Intensive wrinkle repair cream.  As well as some super active anti-ageing extracts, it contains two concentrated anti-oxidants: Arctic cloudberry seed extract and blackberry seed extract. These super foods have a powerful anti-oxidant punch and combine perfectly with our bespoke blend of pressed oils of Abysinnian, camelia, rosehip and kukui nut oils and our trio of butters- shea, mango and cocoa, all of which are jam packed full of essential fatty acids and vitamins. This combination protects the skin from daily wear and tear and helps to prevent the visible signs of ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles."
