September has been super busy for Balance Me HQ! Our focus has been on ‘Back to beauty basics’ and the importance of cleansing in your daily skincare routine, especially to soothe and help replenish ‘sun-kissed’ complexions! I religiously cleanse morning and night with our hot cloth Cleanse and Smooth Face Balm whereas the younger Balance Me team members prefer our super-fast and skin-balancing Pure Skin Face Wash. Both cleansers are bursting with bespoke essential oils, are a pleasure to use and leave skin refreshed, replenished and revitalised.
In mid-September I chaired a Beauty Trends and Innovations Seminar in central London to champion this thriving and dynamic market sector. The beauty industry in the UK employs more than one million people and is worth in excess of £17 billion with a growth forecast of 16% by 2016. Beauty innovators and experts including brand creator and beauty maven Millie Kendall MBE; award-winning freelance journalist and creator of Good Things Skincare, Alice Hart-Davis; and one of the most successful beauty and fashion bloggers in the UK; Fleur de Force, joined forces to share their beauty insights on what’s hot right now and what they predict to be the next big beauty trends of 2015 and beyond.
One of the trends that I found particularly interesting was that of anti-ageing or rather pro-ageing. It seems there is a shift in beauty innovation towards formulas aimed at making skin look better, healthier and more radiant. This is very much the way we view ageing in both our professional and personal lives. Our Radiance Face Oil is quite simply designed to restore natural radiance and a healthy glow, our five-minute Radiance Face Mask brightens and restores dull, lifeless skin, and our Skin Bright Hydrating Face Mist quite literally ‘does what is says on the tin’! I’m proud of my laughter lines and don’t regret smiling so much over the years, despite being told by a beauty industry colleague in my early 20s that I should control my ‘happy’ facial expressions as it was terribly ageing (some advice that I quite simply ignored!). My daughters tell me I look younger in magazine photo shoots and that it isn’t a true representation of how I look in real life! They say I can’t pass for under 40 now (thanks, girls!) but I am not fazed by their honesty, rather the reverse. I’ve spent the last nine years helping to create a beauty brand that embraces ageing in a positive way. Balance Me champions innovation by sourcing natural, cutting edge ingredients to create unique products that push the boundaries of natural beauty to address a whole plethora of skincare concerns; the ageing process being one of them.
Speaking of new product creation I am thrilled to herald the arrival of a new addition to our super toning family: our Super Toning Body Polish. This spa-inspired creamy wash-off polish with walnut spheres, meadow foam and rice bran oils is formulated to smooth, tone and refine areas prone to dimples. And some very stylish basin beauties - our NEW Revitalising Hand and Body Wash and Revitalising Hand and Body Lotion, which feature our sunshine-inspired bespoke blend of zest-ily fresh essential oils to offer skin a daily dose of super quenching moisture. At just £12.50 each we hope you’ll be tempted to purchase for your own homes as well as for those of your family and friends this Christmas.
We’ve had a Marie Claire month with our hugely successful reader events in partnership with Debenhams taking place around the country and to top this off, I was honoured with Clare and Sian to attend Marie Claire’s Women at the Top Awards in central London which is part of their ‘Marie Claire At Work’ initiative. As a Marie Claire mentor and working mother of two daughters I know the challenges women face as they embrace equality in the work place and juggle a hundred and two balls at home! Bravo Marie Claire for bravely recognising non-famous heroines and celebrating their magnificent achievements. I am truly inspired and proud to be part of your MC@Work initiative. Finally, and continuing with the inspirational female theme, Clare and I were honoured and humbled to be invited to present the annual prizes at our former school, Sheffield Girls High School GDST’s awards ceremony. There were some seriously talented girls who have just graduated from SHS, we salute you! We shared memories of our school days in the 70s and 80s including the lows as well as the highs; how our school days have shaped who we are today and how our education has been instrumental in providing us with the confidence and behavioural skills to found our own beauty business. We proudly employ three ex-GDST girls in our growing team and we are always looking for more talent….in fact, check out my daughter’s school council application form. I am keeping a copy on file in case she wants to work for us in the future! [Currently she doesn’t as I embarrass her when I dust and re-arrange Balance Me shelves when we are out and about shopping.]
Until next month….
