We quizzed pilates expert Lottie Murphy on her summer wellness, beauty and exercise tips.

1. What would be your top tip for someone who has just started/is thinking about taking up pilates? 

Getting started is the first step but then staying committed is so important. Find a teacher and class you love and commit to going every week that way the teacher gets to know you and your body and you will progress a lot quicker. Take your time with the execution of each exercise, be present and relax. Try to keep your breathe flowing and really listen to what's going on in your body this is when you'll notice any imbalances and be able to improve your mobility, strength and quality of movement. Then try to take your Pilates practice off the mat and into your every day life by thinking about your posture and core stability when you walk, sit and during other activities. 

2. Apart from pilates, what other types of exercise do you enjoy?

I’m not actually fitness crazy which may surprise some people. I absolutely love my Pilates, reformer Pilates and yoga; I do a couple of classes a week. I walk a LOT and then do the odd spin, boot camp or PT session but I don’t have a strict routine. I use YouTube to train at home and will maybe only fit in a 15-minute session some days but it makes me feel better then if I was to do nothing. 

3. Do you change your diet at all in the summer? What are some of your favourite summer dishes?

Nutrition is such a complex and controversial subject. I have been eating a healthy whole and varied diet since ballet school and I love how it makes me feel, it’s second nature to make healthy choices because I understand the relationship between what I put in my body and my health, thoughts and feelings. However, in terms of all round health, nutrition is only part of the puzzle. You could have the most perfect diet in the world, but if you’re stressed, not sleeping well and lacking energy then something’s obviously not right there. I think a lot of people are confused about what to eat but it’s all down to what makes you feel good, what’s most convenient and makes you happy. In the Summer I naturally crave more fresh fruit and smoothies. I currently love Kombucha that is a fermented tea full of good bacteria so great for digestion. A favourite summer dish of mine is simple lemony quinoa with mint, pomegranate and pumpkin seeds. 

4. Being a blogger/vlogger, how do you find balance between work and personal life?

I used to work and do emails up till 11pm at night but now I tell myself that emails can wait. I need to switch off and spend time with my loved ones. I love what I do so it never feels like I work a day in my life but I make sure I fill my life up with other things that make me happy that aren't associated with my work too like going to the cinema, reading magazines, eating out with Friends etc. 

5. What are your 5 must-have summer skincare essentials?

An exfoliator, oil, a good lip balm, a tinted moisturiser with SPF and lots of water! 

6. What are your top tips from staying healthy on holiday?

So you work your butt off at the gym and in classes to look great in your bikini then completely over indulge on holiday and feel bloated and back to square one when you return? Yes holidays are for relaxing and letting your hair down but we don’t want to come home feeling depressed that we’ve put on 5lbs! When lounging around the pool and by the beach take a litre of water with you and constantly have the H20 on the go! You’ll stay hydrated throughout the day ensuring your skin and hair doesn’t dry out. Avoid that bread basket! I know it’s so tempting when they plonk it on your table before you’ve even looked at the menu and your absolutely starving but just wait that little bit longer for your fresh starter and main and you’ll feel so much lighter and be able to enjoy your food more as you won’t be bloated from all the bread! Ask for olives or roasted tomatoes instead! I also try to stay active everyday by doing some Pilates, going for a long walk or having a dip! That little bit of exercise will make you feel less sluggish and lethargic at the end of the day!
