Clare and I were delighted to be asked by our home town, Sheffield to speak at their annual MADE festival last week. The focus of this year’s festival was to inspire local sixth formers and students to unlock their entrepreneurial side. We were invited to a dinner at the famous Cutler’s Hall the evening before, and I attended with our father, a great Sheffield and Balance Me ambassador (I defy anyone to leave a John Lewis department store if he is in, without a tube of our super moisturising hand cream or our moisture-rich face cream – our mother’s favourite products).
The festival on Friday was hosted by BBC news presenter, Steph McGovern who was an absolutely perfect fit. She was warm, engaging and extremely knowledgeable on ‘all things’ business and invited comments from each of the panellists throughout the morning. We are delighted that we have converted her to Balance Me and she has already been in touch to say that she is enjoying our 100% natural skincare, in particular the radiance face oil and the cleanse and smooth face balm.
Fellow panellists during the course of the morning included 2009 Apprentice winner, Yasmina Siadatan, who now works for Start Up Loans, a business which helps to kick start 30,000 brand new businesses with £151m of government funding (apparently 38% of applications are mothers setting up fashion/beauty businesses) and Stuart Watson, who leads Ernst & Young’s flagship ‘Entrepreneur of the Year UK’ awards programme; as well as a lovely engaging school leaver called Brandon who has set up his own confectionery business ‘Brandon Bon Bon’!
Clare and I found the whole experience extremely inspiring and motivating. We were part of the ‘made it’ panel and we were able to share our story from our school days and education through to our kitchen table brand creation to our now international business. We hope our time in Sheffield has sewn a few entrepreneurial seeds among local students and we look forward to our visit their next year for the international MADE festival in late September where we have been invited once more to take part and tell our business story.
One of members of Sheffield High sixth form (my old school!) who attend the event was Charlotte Farrugia, here she has written a few words about the event for us:
“I thoroughly enjoyed the future MADE Sheffield festival that I was invited to attend. As I am very interested in the entrepreneurial world I felt privileged to be able to obtain a hands on experience, the event has broadened my knowledge immensely and enforced the fact that owning my own business and being a successful entrepreneur is a career I would love to have. I was particularly inspired by the presentation from Rebecca and Claire Hopkins regarding their prodigious and award winning line of skin care Balance Me. Their entrepreneurial journey to succession I found to be amazing! Moreover I got the chance to speak to the lovely sisters after the initial event and their passion about their products and love for their work didn't go amiss. This was a rewarding experience that has sparked a lot of interest, making me more motivated to succeed as a budding entrepreneur. Thank you Balance Me team for this opportunity and thanks for all the freebies (we sold some at young enterprise) I had a great time!”
