Mandy’s Combination Skin Tips

Balance Me Head Facial Therapist Mandy gives her top tips on how to deal with combination skin.

“Combination skin, like other skin types, is inherited, and when treating combination skin, it’s not a one size fits all situation. It’s very important to use different products with different ingredients for the oily and drier parts of the skin. Generally there are more active oil glands on the nose, chin and forehead, while the cheeks have less oil glands. Here are a few of my tips to bring your combination skin back into balance”


1. Be bespoke with your skincare and listen to your skin’s needs. 
Don’t be afraid to use different products on different areas of your face. As long as you don’t overload your skin, it will honestly thank you! For example use our Congested Skin Serum on acne or blemish prone areas, and then apply your daily moisturiser to those areas in need of more hydration such as cheeks and neck. Use a clay-based, acid exfoliating mask in certain areas, and a more hydrating and nourishing mask on others. 

2. Don’t strip the skin.
If our skin suffers from oily zones or the odd breakout it’s easy to be tempted to continually deep clean the skin. However this can cause irritation and upset the natural pH of your skin. Use face washes that don’t disturb the skin’s natural protective barriers. None of our four cleansers contain sulphates, and won’t leave your skin feeling tight or angry. We have a foam-based; micellar water; gently polishing oil-based with a hot cloth and cream-based cleanser. 

3. Use blotting paper.
If you have an oily t-zone, avoid caking that area with powder or mattifying makeup. This can dry out the skin and cause it to make more oil to compensate. Instead use a blotting paper throughout the day to keep shine at bay.

4. Drink water.
Combination skin can often be dehydrated – and this means it’s lacking in water. The lotions and potions you apply can go a long way to help skin issues but it’s equally an issue to be tackled from the inside out. Drinking plenty of water and including lots of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet (with a high water content) will hydrate parched skin from the inside out. 

5. Use light, water-based formulas. 
If you’re worried about the oily aspect of your skin opt for water-based products, which will hydrate your skin but not overload and aggravate it. Another fantastic ingredient to include in your routine is Hyaluronic Acid. This ingredient can hold up to 1,000 times its own weight in water and our body’s own reserves diminish with time.
