We catch up with fellow female entrepreneur and working mum, Alice Walsh of Alice Made This to find out what balance means to her.
They go hand in hand. My own creativity is my work most of the time. I am fortunate to do the creative aspect of AMT. Alice Made This is a jewellery and accessories brand for men and women. It is a balance of Art and Science with materials and processes at the core of our design with our ethos being 'Engineered Simplicity'. Working with factories and materials is where I find a lot of the inspiration to generate our collections from. I also enjoy the outdoors and nature is another prominent area of inspiration. More so it is the precision in nature. I find it fascinating that pattern and detail in nature are driven or formed by function, and are a consequence of evolution, culture or geo-location.
Healthy body and mind. For me this is challenging my brain, challenging my body and a healthy dose of love and laughter (family and friends).
Nothing beats a run along the cliff edge on the suffolk coast. I grew up there and it is my happy place. I also love bedtime stories with my husband and our three kids. It’s a moment in the day where we all focus on one thing together and, most of the time, are undistracted.
‘Ways of Seeing’ by John Berger. An amazing source of inspiration to make you look at things in new ways. That and ‘The Art of Looking Sideways’ by Alan Fletcher.
I have always been quite brave in just trying things. Even if I feel uncomfortable, I always feel that I will regret not trying much more than trying and failing. This has opened many creative doors and it feeds my natural curiosity. There is a wonderful quote in ‘The Art of Looking Sideways’ which I always come back to: “You’ve got to have the courage to close your eyes and jump in the dark aware that you may land on your face and have to get up smiling."
A hot bath with a face mask and some essential oils is like a daily sanctuary. Before bed I use a quick micellar water to cleanse, then a rich night cream as my skin is quite dry. In the morning I am pretty low maintenance, due to lack of time. I live by a BB cream to avoid lots of makeup. Some blusher and a quick brush with mascara before I wolf a bowl of porridge in between dressing the kids and getting them out the door with me for nursery and school.
My favourite is the Cleanse and Smooth Face Balm. I use this in the evening when I have a bath. It makes my skin feel so soft, hydrated and revitalised, I love it. It also smells amazing!
