Balance to me means so many things. It means finding an equilibrium in life, a middle-way within our practices, within our work, within every aspect of our lives. We simply cannot ‘overdo’ things, because that is not sustainable. Overdoing will lead to a dis-ease in life, a sense of unhappiness Finding balance is about listening to our bodies and living a healthy, sustainable life.
My dogs are the biggest pleasure in my life. They fill my heart with love and remind me to be playful, to get up, move and take in the beauty of the world around me, and not to spend my life staring at a screen and tapping at a keyboard! They’re very grounding and keep me in the ‘here and now’ for sure, and when I’m with them I feel a real heart-opening sense of joy.
I’m not a comfort reader, if I’m reading something I’ll just carry on with it, but if I’m not in the mood and am perhaps having a tough time, I’ll just stroke my dogs. They are great therapy.
I love to write, I really enjoy writing newsletters, blogs and articles for my Movement for Modern life community. And I love to think! I spend a lot of time on my own, thinking when I walk and writing, and I love to work on the business of Movement for Modern Life, which is my creative venture. It’s wonderful seeing my business as my creative expression in the world, it’s very satisfying.
My morning ritual is to start with hot lemon and ginger, without which I just don’t feel OK for the day, and then I sit for five minutes in peace and then I immediately start writing my words for the day! I do my movement, yoga practice mid-morning as a break and fitting it around my morning walks. I’ve been a vegetarian since I was 14, and now I’m starting to eat vegan. To end the day, I always have a cup of camomile flowers and write my book to work out what I’ll work on in the morning.
I’ve practiced yoga since I was 18 and it’s just part of my everyday life to help me to re-balance when life gets stressful. My yoga practice is a chance to ‘check in’ inside. Have I been taking deep breaths? How is my nervous system on this day? Am I feeling stiff or free inside? Do I need to energise or nourish? What I love about a home yoga practice is that my practice is bespoke to exactly what I need on that day and at that time. As my practice has matured in the years, I’ve come to know that there’s not one yoga for everyone, everyone needs something different and to practice in a slightly different way, and a yoga practice is a checking in time for what is it that I might need right now.
