Q&A with Mumdays

We quizzed founder of Mumdays.co.uk, an online marketplace for mum gifts that are thoughtful and 100% mum approved, on running her own business, her favorite beauty products and how she finds her balance.

Tell us a little bit about your company Mumdays, and how it all began?

Mumdays.co.uk is an online marketplace for mum gifts that are thoughtful and 100% mum approved. We sell experience gifts and products that have been tried and tested by our panel of real mums. I came up with the idea 6 months after becoming a mum to my twins, when I realised that the one thing all mums crave is to feel appreciated and to have some time back for themselves. Time is the one thing you never have enough of as a parent and as mums it’s such an important thing to be able to recharge and take some time for yourself. 

What does a typical working day look like for you?

A typical working day involves a little bit of everything! From social media to marketing to finance and business planning. We’re still in startup mode which means I’m really close to all aspects of the business. At this stage I’m excited to be bringing on new partners, planning new packages and gifts, as well as innovating new ways to reach more customers and make more mums feel special.

What would you say inspires you each day?

Everyday I’m inspired by my children, but also my own parents who have always had a really strong work ethic. Overall though, I’m motivated by mums, as they do such an important job and Mumdays is all about trying to make them feel appreciated. If I can make one mum smile or feel special each day, then I’m doing a good job. 

Tell us how you manage to achieve your balance when you are the mother of twin toddlers and run a growing business?

I don’t need a lot of sleep, I write a lot of lists and I don’t have much of a social life! That is the secret. 

What does balance mean to you and how do you seek to achieve it?

Balance to me, means being able to appreciate all elements of your life. Whether that’s your family life, your career, your friends, your interests. I try to switch off the other parts of my life so I can be fully present when I’m with my children or when I’m working. Having a mental ‘off’ switch (even if it doesn’t work all the time)  makes me feel less stressed and more in the moment. 

What is the most challenging aspect of running your own business and the most gratifying?

The most challenging thing is not having enough time! Ironic really when my business is all about giving time back to mums, I seem to have less than ever before! Luckily I love being busy and it makes me feel energised. It’s really gratifying to see ideas come to life and to hear from customers who have been overwhelmed with the response to gifts they’ve purchased on www.mumdays.co.uk. At the end of the day, making mums feel special and helping customers to get their gifts right, is what it is all about. 

Could you share a little bit of advice for someone wanting to set up their own business?

Speak to everyone in your network. Everyone has experience that is relevant and interesting when you’re launching a business and you’ll be surprised at how much support there is out there. Conversations equal opportunities so keep talking – to everyone! 

If you could only have 3 beauty products in your makeup bag what would they be?

I can’t bare dry lips so I always have a lip balm in my bag – usually from Burts Bees. 

I’m a total hand cream addict too and love everything that has a rose fragrance, so The Rose Otto handcream by Balance Me is an absolute essential for me.

I always wear SPF, every single day because protection and prevention are key when it comes to healthy skin. At the moment I’m using La Roche Posey. 

After a long working day I unwind and relax by…

Drinking cups of tea, eating chocolate, doing Vinyassa yoga, watching Ru Paul’s Drag Race, catching up with friends and online shopping. Although not all at the same time.
