The Children Act

The Children Act

As autumn approaches, make a date for the cinema and catch Emma Thompson’s new film, The Children Act.

When it comes to thinking about activities that are good for your wellbeing, activities like going to the gym, doing yoga or meditating come to mind – but how about making the occasional cinema date a part of that mix?

It might sound slightly odd at first, linking movie-watching to wellbeing. But just think, how often do you take the time to completely switch off and immerse yourself in focussing on one thing for a couple of hours?

Last month we got a sneak preview of The Children Act, a film based on the eponymous novel by Ian McEwan – and it’s definitely one we would recommend for a cinema date this month!

The film centres around High Court judge Fiona Maye (played by Thompson) who is asked to rule on the case of a teenage boy who is refusing a life-saving blood transfusion on religious principle. The boy is three months from his 18th birthday and still legally a child, so the decision of whether or not to save his life falls to Fiona, at a time where her marriage to American professor Jack (played by Stanley Tucci) is at breaking point and she is facing a personal crisis of her own. As ever, Thompsons performance is incredibly moving, so make sure you have tissues at the ready! Watch the trailer below.

The Children Act is in cinemas now.
