What is sensitive skin

What is sensitive skin and how to treat it

Sensitive skin is a common concern, and not knowing which products to use and which to avoid can be very overwhelming. But don't panic! We can help you get your complexion calm and under control.

Firstly, it is important to understand if your skin type is sensitive, or if it is in fact reacting to a particular ingredient, causing temporary sensitivity to flare up.

Sensitive skin
If your skin type is sensitive, you will be familiar with these everyday symptoms: visible redness, blotchiness, dryness, blemishes, and also these feelings: tightness, itchiness and even stinging sensations.

But what causes this, often uncomfortable skin concern? The two main causes are external and internal factors:

External factors:
Skin has a surface barrier that is designed to protect it from the environment, keeping it healthy and happy. For this barrier to work at its best it must contain moisture, otherwise it is weakened. There are a lot of factors in modern day life that can sap moisture from your skin’s barrier (and in turn cause it to weaken) that sadly we cannot control – such as air conditioning, central heating, cold weather, hard water, pollution and even chemicals found in some skincare products. When the skin barrier is weakened through lack of moisture, it loses its ability to stop these aggressors from getting under your skin. Your skin is very clever, and just like your body can give you a fever to get rid of a virus, your skin will react to anything foreign that should not be there. This reaction is what causes the redness, blotchiness, dryness, blemishes and feelings of tightness, itchiness and stinging.

Internal factors:
We all know that hormones are a huge culprit at giving us spots and congested skin throughout our lives, but the fact is that they can also be responsible for causing sensitive skin. In the same way that hormones can break your skin out in spots during your teenage years, time of the month,  pregnancy or at times of stress – these are also key times when people also notice their skin is at its most sensitive and sore. They key is to understanding how your hormones work to be prepared in advance for any outbursts of sensitivity that you may face and doing what you can to minimise those that you can control – such as stress or lack of sleep.

Reactive skin
On the other hand, if your skin is sensitive to a particular ingredient it will flare up in a very similar way to sensitive skin, but only when exposed to this aggravator. In this case, it can be very tricky knowing exactly what your skin is reacting to and often a trial and error process of cutting out products one at a time is the best way to find out. Once you have pinpointed what it is that is causing your skin to feel sensitive it is easy to control by simply avoiding the product or ingredient that causes you trouble.
