Wow Women - Lucinda Miller

Why is natural so important? Lucinda Miller from Nature Doc reveals why natural ingredients are the best gift you can give your body.

1.What we put in and on our bodies is increasingly important are there any ingredients we should always avoid? Many brands add chemicals to their cosmetic products to help prevent the growth of bacteria, mould and yeast. Parabens are often used to extend shelf life and spoiling of the cosmetics. Sadly what they also bring are hormone disruptors known as xeno-estrogens, which have been linked to certain cancers. This is why paraben –free cosmetics are a must in my mind.

Triclosan is another endocrine disruptor that is known to harm the thyroid and reproductive hormones. It is often added to antibacterial soaps and toothpaste so always check the labels and find some lovely natural alternatives.

Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), also known as Sodium laureth sulphate (SLES) is a foaming agent added to almost all shampoos, face washes and toothpastes. While it is very hard to cut out entirely, as it is almost everywhere, it is another chemical I feel we should avoid or reduce. It can be a skin and eye irritant and some people complain of a dry mouth when it is added to toothpaste. SLS may also be toxic to a developing foetus and can alter disrupt hormones, so it is best to avoid during your child rearing years and whilst going through the menopause.

2.Why is natural so important? Our skin is our largest organ in our body. We absorb everything we rub into our skin and this is why natural ingredients in all skin and hair care products are so important. I go with the mantra that you should “only put products on your skin which you are happy to eat”.

3.Food for thought isn’t just a saying, what are the best ingredients for our brain? Mental and cognitive health is the key to a happy and healthy life. My top brain foods are oily fish, organic eggs, avocado, seeds, nuts and green leafy vegetables. It is also important to keep well hydrated and to drink plenty of filtered water daily.

4.One piece of advice you’d like to pass on? Always cook from scratch to avoid processed foods.

5.The quality or characteristic do you find most inspiring? I just love people who are positive and motivated!

6.Which Balance Me product inspires balance in you? I have treasured Balance Me products for over 12 years. After a busy day in the clinic I love to have a hot Epsom salt bath followed with some gorgeous Restore and Replenish Face Cream to rehydrate and moisturise my tired skin.
