When it comes to fixing most everyday skin concerns, hydration is usually the main solution. If your skin is properly hydrated it will be healthy-looking, well-balanced, and you probably won’t experience things like dryness, oiliness, uneven skin tone, a dull skin texture or prominent fine lines. Hydration holds the key to most of our radiant, even, smooth-skin prayers, especially when it comes to dehydration and dryness.
But did you know that there is a difference between dry and dehydrated skin? Dry skin – a skin type you are born with - lacks oil. Dehydrated skin – a skin condition caused by things like diet, using the wrong ingredients and temperature changes - lacks water. Both have similar symptoms, only you can usually spot dehydrated skin through its dull texture, lack of elasticity and fine lines, whilst dry skin shows itself through cracked or flaky skin on areas like the face, scalp, hands and legs. Both dry and dehydrated skin need hydration from head to toe to replenish what’s been lost, whether that’s water or oil (or, in some cases, both).
So, what ingredients should we be adding to our skincare check list to combat desert-like or lacklustre skin? Well, hydration heroes like hyaluronic acid, shea butter and rosehip oil are all known for their excellent moisturising properties with rosehip oil also being great for brightening and reducing inflammation and shea butter acting as a brilliant skin softener and de-puffer. Hyaluronic acid, an iconic ingredient for super-charged hydration, is found naturally in the skin so is suitable for all skin types. Vitamin E and artic berry are both powerful anti-oxidants that help to protect and nourish the skin, whilst squalene is a super-effective emollient. With one – or all – of those on your team, you’ll notice an impressive difference in your skin’s hydration levels.
Now that you’ve established whether you’re dry or dehydrated, you can now begin to make the necessary tweaks to your routine for enviably hydrated and healthier-looking skin.
