What are PHAs in skincare?

If you are interested in adding exfoliating acids into your skincare routine, but worried alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) will irritate or dehydrate your skin, Polyhydroxy Acids (PHAs) might be just the answer. PHAs are gentle yet effective, a game-changer for those with dehydrated, sensitive and rosacea prone skin.

PHAs in Detail

PHA (Polyhydroxy Acids) act as chemical exfoliants, but unlike AHA’s, PHA’s are gentler on skin causing less irritation. They have a large molecular structure so penetrate the skin at a slower rate and don’t travel as deep as AHAs. Instead, they gently remove dead skin cells and any debris on the surface to reveal softer, smoother skin with a more even skin tone.

There are several types of PHA’s with the most notable ones being gluconolactone (a powerful antioxidant) used in our PHA Clarifying Mist formulation, approved by Ecocert Greenlife in accordance with the Natural and Organic Cosmetics standards.

Benefits of PHAs

Gentle on Skin: the larger molecule structure gently removes surface debris without disturbing the deeper delicate layers.

Retain Moisture: PHAs are humectants, simultaneously moisturising the skin and keeping it hydrated, to restore a glowing complexion.

Slow Signs of Ageing: PHAs fight glycation, a process that weakens collagen and elastin in your skin. Antioxidant rich, PHAs will also stimulate epidermal growth and repair, to help your skin appear plumper.

Who Can Use PHAs?

PHAs are suitable for virtually all skin types including people with sensitive, rosacea, or eczema prone skin. Thanks to the humectant properties, those with dehydrated skin will feel the benefit and comfort. Anyone who has experienced sensitivity to AHAs and BHAs in the past, could benefit from PHAs too.
